FYI, Rob the robot is a cartoon series which is going to launch in Singapore this mid-November. The cartoon’s homepage can be found at http://robtherobot.com/ . It is an interactive story telling app that educates kids about fun and adventure. The application we are building is a native iOS app (currently optimized for iPad but will be extended to iPhone as well).
The app is built on our owned framework which is scalable and extensible. The importance of the having such a framework is because the cartoon itself has 52 episodes in total and the app is going to be updated accordingly (For the first version of this app, we build only one episode of the series named “Knight for a day ”). We want to simplify the content management process later on. The framework is now consist of some modules: main screen, movies scene, storybook scene , a game …. which are reusable. More modules are going to be added in v0.2 (another game, end episode scene…).
There are many difficulties that we encountered, both technical and non-technical ones. The most significant one is to work with external parties (2359 Media and One Animation). We need to wait for resources like audio, graphics, videos and for our ideas to be approved. This process causes lots of lags in the project.
After the meeting with Prof Ben, 2359 Media and the class presentation, we got a lot of feedback about the app. New features has been being implemented, especially the update system which lets user download new episode and a new game. Watch out for our new updates of v0.2 which will be ready in a couple of days ! J
